How to Store Food Safely

Proper food storage is essential to prevent spoilage, reduce waste, and avoid foodborne illnesses. Whether you're dealing with fresh produce, leftovers, or pantry staples, following the right storage methods will help keep your food safe and fresh for longer.

1. Store Perishables at the Right Temperature

Temperature plays a key role in keeping food safe.

  • Keep your refrigerator at or below 40°F (4°C) and the freezer at 0°F (-18°C).
  • Store raw meats, poultry, and seafood on the bottom shelf to prevent drips onto other foods.
  • Use airtight containers to keep food fresh and avoid contamination.

2. Know What to Refrigerate and What to Keep at Room Temperature

Not all foods need to be refrigerated, but some do even if they seem shelf-stable.
